The origin
The Yi Peng Festival
The Yi Peng Festival has its roots in the history of the ancient Lanna Kingdom and was originally a religious ceremony honoring the heavenly god Phra Ket Kaew Chulamani. By releasing lanterns (Khom Loi), worshippers symbolize letting go of worries, resentment, and the mistakes of the past year in order to experience spiritual purification. At the same time, the light is considered an offering to Buddha, which in turn is expected to bring good fortune, prosperity, and new opportunities for the future. This celebratory gesture marks the beginning of a new life cycle and illustrates the Buddhist principle of impermanence.
